Michael Zerafa could be set for one of the biggest fights in the history of Australian boxing.

While he was originally billed to fight the no.1 ranked IBF middleweight Esquiva Falcao for that title, Zerafa says he could be set for a far bigger bout for the WBA crown.

Boxing superstar Gennady Golovkin is the champion at middleweight with the WBA, and with Zerafa now the number one ranked contender, the pair could face off next year.

Golovkin is first billed to take on Cuba’s Erislandy Lara, and if he gets through that unscathed, Zerafa expects to face “the biggest name in boxing” next up.

“I’ll have to clarify a few things, even bigger and better things have come into the works,” Zerafa said on SEN’s This Is Your Journey – thanks to Tobin Brothers.

“It was Esquiva Falcao for the IBF World Title, but recently I’ve moved to number one in the WBA (rankings) in the world.

“The man that it looks like we might be facing is Gennady Golovkin, ‘Triple G’.

“He’s the biggest name in boxing, he only just lost against Canelo Alvarez, and this is going to be a huge fight.”

While Golovkin is an imposing figure, Zerafa believes a potential bout could even occur in Melbourne next March.

“There’s talks it might be in Australia, in Melbourne, for all of the gold,” Zerafa said.

“There’s a spanner in the works and it’s worked out even bigger and better, I’m looking forward to it.

“Gennady Golovkin has come back down to middleweight and kept his titles and he’s picked me as the man to be next in line.

“It’s looking like March next year.”

Zerafa holds a 30-4 record and has a three-fight win streak under his belt.

It’s believed Zerafa’s next fight could come against Mexico’s Jaime Munguia in Orlando, Florida.
