Senior captain tabbed league’s offensive player of the week

HOUSTON – University of Houston senior quarterback Clayton Tune has been named American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Tune led the Cougars to a second consecutive conference road victory – and sixth consecutive American regular season road win dating to a season ago – as Houston defeated Navy, 38-20 on Saturday. The team captain finished 21 for 30 with 261 passing yards while matching a Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium record with five passing touchdowns.

The Carrollton, Texas, native became the sixth FBS quarterback this season to throw for five-or-more touchdowns without an interception in a true road game. With his performance, Tune also moved into third in program career history in touchdowns responsible for with 94.

Tune ranks second nationally with 23 games of 20-plus completions since the start of the 2020 season. Through seven games this season, the signal caller ranks 19th in the country in completions per game (23.14), passing touchdowns (17) and points responsible for per game (17.4).

Houston returns to action at 11 a.m. CT Saturday when it welcomes South Florida to TDECU Stadium for Homecoming. The contest will be the ninth all-time between the Cougars and Bulls with Houston holding a 6-2 series lead thanks to six consecutive victories (2013-present).
