10 24 1b nmu uaa hockeyyyyMARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University hockey team put a pounding on Alaska-Anchorage 9-1 on Friday.

Anchorage was quickly down a man after Carson Kosobud was penalized two minutes for holding, though the Seawolves put up a fight as they successfully fought off the Wildcats’ power play.

With about 3 1/2 minutes left in the opening period, NMU’s AJ Vanderbeck scored the only goal before the first intermission as it was assisted by Artem Shlaine and Colby Enns.

“I thought early in the game we were just off,” NMU head coach Grant Potulny said. “But as the game went I thought we got better.”

The second period didn’t bode well for Anchorage after the ‘Wolves were called for a major penalty. On the “endless” power play, Kristof Papp scored twice in less than two minutes with assists going to Alex Frye and Vanderbeck on the second goal.

Before the five minutes was up, Vanderbeck added his second of the night on a Josh Zinger assist to make it 4-0.

Then with little more than a minute left in the period, Vincent de Mey also scored on assists by Reilly Funk and Jeff Jungels to make it 5-0 at the second break.

Within the first couple minutes of the third period, Alex Frye scored on assists from Papp and Joey Larson, bringing the score to 6-0.

Then about 2 1/2 minutes after that, ex-Wildcat Connor Marritt broke up freshman Beni Halasz’s shutout, though it was still a five-goal lead for Northern.

The hosts added three more goals down the stretch by David Keefer, Mikey Colella and de Mey for the final margin.

This game was NMU junior Jett Jungels’s first game of the season.

“Jett earned his way into this game in practice and I think from the beginning of the year our probably most consistent player in practice,” Potulny said. “Tonight he brought energy and I was happy to see it.”
