The 20-year old bagged the opening goal of the game by unleashing a superbly controlled low effort into the far side of the net.

Left-back Doig has already netted twice for Verona in five league appearances having only ever scored once for the Hibees first team.

He showed fantastic control and poise as he watched the ball drop from the sky after a poor headed clearance before smacking it first time past the goalkeeper.

Doig certainly appeared to enjoy the strike as he executed a a perfect kneeslide in front of the home fans.

Verona, however, couldn’t capitalise on the stunning opening goal as they ultimately slumped to a 2-1 defeat.

The match ended in heartbreaking fashion for Doig and company as Udinese nicked it with a 90th minute strike from Jaka Bijol.

The goal, on a personal level, at least caps off a memorable period for Doig.

Having followed Aaron Hickey’s example and headed to Italy in the summer, he’s nailed down his place in the Verona team in recent weeks.

His form saw him called into the Scotland squad by Steve Clarke during the recent international window for the crunch Nations League matches.

Doig, however, is still waiting to make his international debut for the national team although he’s recently become captain of Scot Gemmill’s under-21 side.

Doig will get the chance to test himself against some of Italy’s best in the coming weeks.

Verona will host the giants of AC Milan, Roma and Juventus at home before the break for the World Cup in a month’s time.
