Gunther Steiner has denied having already chosen Nico Hulkenberg to replace Mick Schumacher from the 2023 season.

With media reporting that Pierre Gasly has signed for Alpine next year, released through AlphaTauri’s deal with Nyck de Vries, sources in Germany say Haas F1 have offered Hulkenberg a deal ready to sign.

« Our list includes drivers who have a super license and we review them all, » responds Steiner to these speculations.

« And yes, Nico is one of them. But Mick is also still on the list because otherwise we would have already made a decision and announced it. »

« We still have to see what is the best decision for the team going forward. »

He insists that there is « no deadline » for finalizing his deliberations with team owner Gene Haas.

On the side of Mick Schumacher, it is confirmed that the links are not broken with Haas.

« There is nothing new on this side. »

On whether the continued uncertainty is a problem for him given that most buckets are starting to fill up, he responds by suggesting that Haas may well be his only option to stay in F1 next year.

« No, it doesn’t distract us. I think the team knows what I can do and where we want to go. We have all the data, so the facts are on the table. Pressure has always been part of my life and my sporting career. I like this pressure and turn it into extra motivation and drive. »
